Our Jam Journey
Growing up in England, Vicky spent childhood summers on farms and foraging with her family for the finest fruits to make jam for a pantryful of preserved treats for enjoyment year round - a family tradition handed down through generations of sustainable living from the land. Joe grew up 1,400 miles away in Gibraltar - a British colony on the tip of the Iberian peninsula, with a Spanish, North African and Italian cooking heritage, and a natural intuition of the unique characters and best uses for a wide range of spices. Add to this their ten years working and traveling throughout Asia, South America and the Middle East before settling in the US, Blake Hill embodies a unique blend of preserve making traditions with a deep love and appreciation of flavors around the world.
Blake Hill is not just a preserves company, it is the farm where it all started - an 1800s farming property nestled in the mountains surrounding the tiny village of Grafton Vermont, population 600, and voted one of New England’s prettiest towns. Settling here in 2005, we reclaimed an old sheep barn for our home and started enjoying simple country life, including making jams from the abundant wild berries surrounding our farmhouse. One late summer day in 2009, a friend snuck a jar of our homemade Wild Blackberry and Apple jam to Grafton’s Village Store and won our first order. Quickly selling out, we replenished their stock, and Blake Hill Preserves was born!
Our home kitchen became an 18 hour a day commercial jam-making space. Each room of our farmhouse became a separate warehouse space for jams, marmalades, or chutneys. We could not have been happier!
In 2012, we built Blake Hill’s first Preserves facility in Grafton as orders quickly increased from a few cases to a pallet or more. We developed close relationships with some of Vermont’s finest cheesemakers and bakers - including collaborations we enjoy to this day.
We quickly realized Blake Hill Preserves needed an even larger kitchen. So, we built our new facility in beautiful Windsor, Vermont in 2016. We also opened our first Specialty Preserves Shop.
Today we are sold at some of the nation’s finest specialty food stores, and our quality continues to be recognized with major award wins and media coverage every year. We believe our success is because we conduct everything we do as true artisans. Our team of talented preserve makers still make everything by hand. We focus on the finest ingredients, cherish our local farmer relationships, and forage select ingredients from Vermont meadows.
We hope you love our sweet, savory, and spicy jams as much as we enjoy making them.
